Whatever your choice of frozen fun, for the second consecutive year Oldham Pond is open for business, thanks to sustained cold temperatures and solid ice conditions. Skating, fishing, hockey and more are once again drawing residents from Pembroke and surrounding communities.

Across the frozen expanse, ice fishing has become a favorite family activity. Hockey players have carved snow berms to create makeshift rinks, while others lace up their skates to glide across stretches of ice cleared naturally by winter winds.

A family from Scituate braved the cold on a recent Saturday to try their luck on the ice. The fish were biting, and they reeled in — and released — several yellow perch. Nearby, another fisherman proudly reported catching a 21-inch smallmouth bass from the warmth of his ice-fishing tent. As he packed up his gear, he said he planned to return the next day for more.

With all this activity, Oldham Pond has become a welcome source of recreation and relief from the winter doldrums. Local outdoor enthusiasts are hopeful that the cold weather — and the winter fun it brings — will continue this season and return for years to come.

Safety Reminder: Ice conditions can change daily. Residents are urged to check with their local fire department or town officials before venturing onto any frozen ponds, lakes or bogs.
